Itaipu Biological Refuge
The Itaipu Biological Refuge is a remarkable conservation area located in Foz do Iguaçu, serving as a vital sanctuary adjacent to one of the world's largest hydroelectric dams, Itaipu Binacional. This unique natural reserve was established to protect and rehabilitate endangered species that were relocated during the dam's construction. Today, the refuge has evolved into one of South America's most significant biodiversity hotspots, with dense forests surrounding the artificial reservoir successfully supporting thriving populations of rare and endemic species.
Spanning approximately 17,000 hectares, this protected area is home to an impressive array of wildlife including caimans, jaguars, pumas, capybaras, and hundreds of bird species native to the Atlantic Forest. Visitors can embark on guided expeditions through pristine forest trails, observe wildlife in their natural habitat, and participate in educational programs that reveal the ecological importance of this region and the delicate balance of tropical ecosystems.
Beyond its appeal as a tourism destination, the Itaipu Biological Refuge stands as a testament to conservation efforts and environmental research. It demonstrates how large-scale industrial projects can coexist with nature protection, offering visitors an inspiring example of how humanity can balance development with ecological responsibility and wildlife preservation.
